What is the "Poorman's Copyright" you ask? Practiced globally, copyright owners simply themselves send a copy of their work by registered mail. The intentention is that the Post Office's date-stamps and "strict protocol" could provide time-line evidence and act as a third-party witness to their copyright ownership.
The "poorman's copyright" is described as follows:
1. Hermetically seal an envelope or package containing the copyright(s)
2. Send it to yourself by registered mail, ensuring that the Postmaster date-stamped the envelope with his rubber Post-office Stamp.
3. Once back from its round trip through the Post-office, place package in safe-storage somewhere.
4. Produce the un-opened envelope in court, using the date-stamp on the outside of the envelope to demonstrate when you first had your copyright, and then open it to reveal the "body" of the copyright itself.
The "Poorman's Copyright" should work, right... WRONG! Unfortunately, the poorman's copyright has been successfully argued against in US Courts. Clever lawyers have argued that the process can be tampered with. For example, one could send an empty, unsealed envelope through the postal system, acquiring the date-stamp on the empty envelope, and then insert your "latest" copyrights as the contents at a later date. Because of agrguments like this, the "Poorman's Copyright" method of date-stamping as proof of ownership will no longer stand up in any court of law.
We now live in a world where your copyrights are vulnerable on a global scale. This is why WorldWideOCR has come to be. We have vastly improved upon the idea of the "Poorman's Copyright" and brought it into the 21st Century.
